LO4: Justification

For my comic book I have made the front cover and two pages of my graphic novel.

I believe I have met the codes and conventions of a superhero comic book. I have met these conventions by Science Man saving the city from the evil Captain Gaul. Science Man's heroic abilities save a whole city is connoted on the front cover of my comic book. Science Man is captured in a powerful pose showing of his large stature. Another way I have followed the codes and conventions is the introduction of the super villain Captain Gaul in the first panel as he terrorises the city. A stereotypical villain attribute. This can link to Marvel Comic Iron Man where he saves civilians from evil forces trying to take him down. Using powers he created.

Through my novel I have used bright colours and bold sans serif font to make the story as clear as possible. This is used by a lot of major comic book publishers. These meaning I have met the following codes of conventions through the visual styles of graphic novels of the superhero genre. In the first two panels I have set out the scene of where Science Man is based and where the comic book will be fully set. In the first panel I set out the action that is happening straight away. As the news report the supervillains chaos. This links to Iron Man having a normal life but switching instantly to Iron Man.
I set my action in the daytime. This is to connote the length in which the fight has been going on for. And it started in the morning, this connoting that the fight is a everyday accordance. This shows that the war is a popular and considered as a 'Great War'

I have inked my panels in a way that connotes a more simple and basic. This can link to the traditional online comic book. This can link to the form of webisodes and web comics. The visual style can also link to my target audience as they are slightly younger audience.

I used motion lines to denote movement. I did especially in the panel where Science Man and Captain Gaul are fighting. I used these around both character to shown them both fighting. These lines are used in comic books such as Iron Man and other Marvel comics. These lines are bold black to show action but are not the most eye catching on the panel as the bright housestyle colours are consistently there. This example used in Iron Man shows the lines being used surrounding Iron Man.
In my comic book there is no graphic content. These follows the codes and conventions of my target market of my comic book, as they are younger. Also there is no homophobic and racial abuse in this comic book as it would be ethically wrong. My comic book main purpose is to make science look appealing and cool to the younger audience. This can help create more jobs around science and more people to study science. Education surrounded by simplistic drawings designed to appeal to younger people. This style would appeal to the BBC and could further Science Man and put him on a TV show such as CBBC as a way to promote science to young teenagers. However Not realistic the comic serves a purpose in education which is needed in non fiction comics alongside entertainment. This being the perfect combination to appeal to a younger audience learning about science.

LO4: Evidence Of Editing

Front Cover

For my front cover I set my background colour to light blue as it can make the front cover stand out and also highlight the main character on the front. I added a black half circle on the bottom of the page so the cover was not boring and basic, This went along with the circle design of the title and logo of the comic. This then lead to pencilling the main character using Adobe Illustrator by tracing over my final drawing of him in the exact pose. After pencilling Science Man I inked him in Photoshop. Using the paint bucket tool to fill in the character fully. I filled in the font and the solid graphics as well. I used a superhero font to add to the genre of the comic. I added a green colour to the writing to make the title pop out and make it very noticeable. I had the main character overlap the title as I have seen it been done in Marvel comics. This is so the character is shown in full form and blends both image and title together as one.
Re Using Assets
I re used the character facial features across my panels. I did this as a way making sure the comic book has similar drawings throughout the comic book. I did this by selecting all lines created in Illustrator and copied it into a different position in a different panel. I edited the size and rotation so it would fit naturally and fit in with the scene. This kept all the scenes with this character in look good and the same. This simple duplication technique kept a constant style and a constant design to the characters. This being essential in all comic books.

Inking

For inking I had to use the software Photoshop to ink my panels easier. I used the paint bucket tool to fill each section of my character. For skin colour I found the HEX code for skin colour and kept that as my secondary colour so I can easily add skin colour to my characters. However I had to cut off any section of the desire area I wanted to fill. This is so the paint would not fill everywhere else. I used a 1px pen to create a line to cut the section. To paint bucket my characters easier I placed them straight from Illustrator on a transparent background so I can see which areas are needed to fill. I also used the colour history brush to make colours from all the panels the same.

Creating The Panels

For my panels I have changed my idea from a bolt style layout to a more simple layout but also slightly unique. It is a grid design with panels slightly larger than other. This connotes the action scenes. I saved the panels as individual panels and placed them into my layout. My layout being made by using the line tool and increasing the stroke the line making the panels easy to see and the scenes easy to pick and read. I used the free transform tool to fit my panels into place. With this I needed to hold shift to not distort and stretch the image keeping look normal. I chose Photoshop as I believe I had more control with my images by using the transform tool and I can easily drag my images into the desired space. I continued to do this both of my pages so both my pages are the same in terms of design.

LO2: Explore the feasibility for further development of the main character in future stories across different media formats

Tv And On Demand

My comic book could potentially be turned into a cartoon series on Tv channels such as Cartoon Network and kids shows such as Nickelodeon. This could be broadcasted early in the morning. This is because kids wake up for school. Because my comic book has a educational element to it as it includes the school subject science. This means that my series will be child friendly and appropriate for kids tv. My comic book would be turned into an animation as it would be easier to make the comic book into a moving animation. The episodes would be released weekly. I would also advertise the TV show for all new episodes this will create more viewers for my show.

Radio
To advertise my comic I could advertise my comic on radio. These radio adverts can be aired in the morning when kids wake up for school around 7-9. I could promote the comic using heroic and epic music. This appealing to the target audience. These adverts could be put on BBC Radio 2. This could be advertised during their short story section dedicated to kids. The radio could also be used to advertise The Adventures Of Science Man on other forms of media such as the TV series and print. Also for the radio show, there could be a Q&A to the cast. Also there could be talk with the penciler and inker. This appealing to the big fans of the comic. The music for the radio show could be the music used for the animation. Also the music alongside this would be age appropriate and upbeat and happy this to go alongside the superhero genre. The radio show would be used as a way to advertise all forms of my comic.

Traditional Print
Leaflets and posters would be given out around schools. This will show the title of the comic and show the main character aswell. Also denoting information on where to buy the comic. On the print there is an image of the main character Science Man on it. On this poster it will advertise the other forms of the story on different forms of media featured around the sides of the print in bold to make it appealing. This alongside bright colours will appeal to a younger audience as kids like bright colours. The bright colours will be in the housestyle of the comic. This helping the branding of the comic.

Screening Events
A local release would be more appropriate as the audience for my comic is not big enough for a national release. So a local release at the Odeon or the Showroom would be more appropriate. As my story for my comic book is educational as it is about science it will educate the audience such as kids. The event will appeal to kids with access to colouring book with science man in them.  If the event is successful then the Odeon will generate a lot of profit and will have more events like this making them create a lot of profit in the long run. The profit from drinks and food being bought during the event making this a very important business opportunity. As it includes families spending time together thus creating more people buying drinks and food.

Online
A dedicated Instagram account could be created to enhance the Science Man brand. Instagram is suitable because Instagram appeals to a large variety of people including young parents and young people. This also appealing to digital natives with young kids. With Instagram I can promote the comic book using images of scienceman and provide links to where you can buy the comic and read. This being a link to iTunes where they can download the comic. The photos will appeal to the parents because they can show the kids and get the kids excited.

LO2: Proposal for the comic book covering: Character & Backstory, Proposed Storyline, Target Audience, Genre, Art Style, publisher, copyrighted Material

The Adventures Of Science Man
Created By James Pryke

Storyline
My main Character for my comic book is the superhero "Science Man" His real name being DR David Rogers. A PHD scientist who created multiple experiments that can be seen slightly lethal. Upset with his creation, he used his chemicals for good and took out various criminals. Whilst decreasing crime he made the police seem obsolete and made some police officers redundant. This angered one police officer particularly Alexander Gaul. He became so annoyed with Rogers he created his own super power and became freakishly strong and tall. Science Man and Captain Gaul have battled for months now. My comic features one of their battles where Gaul is so close to winning by making the biggest chemical weapon in all man kind and has only one target he want to obliterate. Science Man has to dig deep and pull out his best creations to save himself and the world.

Character And Backstory
My main Character for my comic book is the superhero "Science Man" His real name being DR David Rogers. A PHD scientist who created multiple experiments that can be seen slightly lethal. Upset with his creation, he used his chemicals for good and took out various criminals. Rogers was bullied at his school for being too smart. To tackle this he started to create prank chemicals because he was sick of being lonely. With his family paying all their money to send him to Oxford University he made sure he became the smartest in nuclear science.

Target Audience
My comic targets a young demographic however a slightly mature one as well as it uses weapons in a slightly negative way. However the way the characters are presented, using bright colours and slightly simple drawings. There is no inappropriate language and content this making it appeal to kids and teenagers. This also appeals to anyone in education as it glorifies science and will make kids want to pursue in it. This will appeal to the teachers as they can use this comic as revision material for their classes. This also alongside with the bright colours and simplistic designs appeals to their minds.

Genre
The genre of this comic will be completely action and adventure with a sub genre of sci-fi this being because of the supernatural super villain and the super natural superhero creating impossible products. These drawings will hopefully in the style of multiple action comics such as Marvel and DC.

Publisher And Art Style.
My comic would be suitable for Marvel to publish the comic as Marvel are a publisher that create mainly superhero comics with comics like Iron Man and Spider Man. Also the art style of my comic would be suitable as it will be a more American style of design, not designs such as Anime and Manga. Also because Marvel are an American Company so this style would link with their nationality. Another good publisher would be DC comics, they are a rival to Marvel with their darker style of design. As they publish comics such as Batman and Superman. These comics being the second biggest superhero comic book company.

Copyright
The Adventures Of Science Man is my own original comic book series. This series all being created by me. This means I'm not using copyright material meaning I make all the revenue from this comic. Also I take all the job roles such as inker and pencillers. Also anyone will have to gain permission to use any of my assets.

Thus starting the story of Iron Man. The first Artist for Iron Man was George Tuska. He work being in association with Marvel Comic for a a long time. The Inker Bob Layton, was the Inker for all of the first Volume of Iron Man. Showing his classic colours of red and gold. The main storylines for Iron man is inventor who has created this stare of the art suit which can fly and fight crime. For a suit that is made out of iron the penciller had to make the design of the main character look stocky and strong, this with a rigid metal design. The genre of this comic is action and adventure this links with the superpowers that Iron Man has. His powers of flight and lasers these appeal to the target audience to this genre. The story of Tony stark having an alcohol problem This adding to the story. The Inker picked the colours gold because the connotations of the colour shows strong dominance. The character appeals to the audience appeals to the target audience because Tony Stark is the ideal self. This is because the character is rich and is smart. These life qualities, is what the audience would do anything for. Also he makes his own suits with amazing technology. This amazing technology fitting in with the Sci fi genre.

Spider Man is a superhero that was bitten by a radioactive spider and turns into a superhero who can produce spider webs and use it to save civilians and fight crime. Spider Man first featured in the Amazing Fantasy comic where he was introduced in his traditional red and blue suit. These colours were inked by Steve Ditko. These colours connoting confidence. This however not what Peter Parker is like in real life. When he is fighting his enemies he is making jokes and playing around. This connoting his confidence in his powers as being attacked by criminals is not a good situation.  The inker's colours that he uses are bright and contrast well together. This enhances spider man as the main character as he is standing out against his enemies. The penciler for Spiderman was Jack Kirby. Kirby made spiderman's suit skin tight. This enhancing his muscular strength connoting he is a superhero.

One of the first inkers for captain America was Jack Kirby. He inked captain America in a very light bright blue and red and white with his traditional shield and wings on his head. These wings are later removed as a modern take to the marvel classic. Captain America appeals to the young target audience because Captain America represents ideal self with his muscles and god like abilities. He appeals to the superhero genre because he wears the traditional spandex clothes which all superheroes wear.
